My Surely wine reviews, explained

I have yet to come across a wine replacement that makes me forget I’m drinking non-alcoholic wine. It’s just not there yet. Dealcoholization changes the taste profile of wine by removing the things that give it complexity. Plus, alcohol is between 12-18% of most wines. If a recipe was 14% garlic and you cut it to 0.5%, would that change the taste?

For this reason, I am judging against other non-alcoholic wines and wine replacements. These reviews are geared toward people who want quality products, but are willing to compromise compared to regular wines.

This Surely wine review goes from best to least impressive. This doesn’t mean anything here is awful. Just that some are better than others and I’m putting those up front. (Because priorities.)

Surely Sparkling Rosé review: Surely Rosé poured into a glass with can behind.

Surely Sparkling Rosé Review

For my money, Surely Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Rosé is their best non-alcoholic wine. Perfect for a warm summer day, maybe lounging by the pool or at a barbecue. It’s crisp and refreshing, while keeping the sweetness to a minimum.

You can get it either in bottles or 4-pack of 8.5 oz. cans. (I used the cans for this review, can’t say if there’s a difference.) I love that this comes in cans. You can quickly toss it in the cooler with all the other drinks, pop it open, and enjoy. No glassware needed.

If you like a nice rosé, but need to cut out the alcohol, this a great way to get that bubbly rosé vibe and stay true to your goals. Only 15 calories in this 8 oz. can. Wow.

The Pour Test

Surely Rosé wine review: Non-alcoholic sparkling Rosé being poured out of can and into wine glass.

When I poured the sparkling rosé out of the can, I first noticed it has a pale pink color. I’m not getting much berry smells on the nose, more so the grapefruit citrus and something that has a little funk. Could be the passion fruit or the guava puree.

The Taste Test

Surely Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Rose is light and crisp. Surely describes it as “hints of strawberry, raspberry, and a touch of guava.” You definitely get some berry taste, but it’s balanced and not too sweet. (Most NA rosés are too sweet, IMO.) The finish is lightly acidic and dry. There’s also a touch of funk in there, which might be the guava coming through. Medium carbonation, not too prickly. Admittedly, it lacks the body and complexity of alcoholic rosés. But it’s very refreshing. This sparkling rosé is worth trying.

Surely sparkling brut review: Sparkling brut poured in a wine glass with bottle beside.

Surely Sparkling Brut Review

Surely Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Brut is their second best offering. (Surely wines made sure to focus on sparkling wine, which I think works in their favor. They tend to perform best.)

Brut wines are supposed to be dry, so we should expect this to follow the style of dry sparkling wines and champagnes. This one comes in either the 750 ml. bottle or the 4-pack of cans. I tried the bottle, can’t say if the cans taste different or not.

The Pour Test

Surely non-alcoholic sparkling brut review: Sparkling brut being poured into a wine glass.

This pours a light golden yellow color out of the can. There’s plenty of lemon zeston the nose, along with some sweeter fruit smells. Very bright aroma. It smells like a decent bubbly.

The Taste Test

This is very good for an NA wine. It’s crisp with some subtle sweetness and a nice dry finish. There’s a good balance between sweet and complex here. The richness is balanced by the acidity, and the carbonation adds texture. I will say that the citrusy lemon is prominent, which for some might make it overly acidic (bitter). That said, I’d buy this again.

Surely Sauvignon Blanc Review

Sauvignon Blanc wines are often citrusy with some green apple, passion fruit, and peach notes. Surely added some pear and guava puree to theirs, as well as cane sugar. This is probably why it’s clocking in higher on calories (50 per 8 oz. serving). Let’s see how it is.

The Pour Test

When I poured this one out, I noticed it has a light gold color, a little darker than most Sauvignon Blancs. You definitely get some of the guava and passion fruit on the nose, but it doesn’t smell particularly sweet. There’s a vinegary smell here, too. Not sure if it’ll come through in the flavor. We’ll see.

The Taste Test

I’m impressed by this. It’s crisp and bright, while not being too sweet. The fruit shows up on the palate, but it’s subtle. There’s also some citrus. No grassiness, that I can tell, which often happens in Sauvignon Blancs. There is a touch of vinegar on the side of the mouth, but it doesn’t ruin it. I think this performed well, I’d buy it again.

Surely Pinot Noir Review

Pinot Noirs are typically light to medium bodied with medium tannins and red fruit flavors. Surely pinot noir has some added ingredients, like passion fruit juice and cranberry juice. The juice may be why it came in at 50 calories per 8 oz. serving. Let’s see how the Surely Pinot Noir stacks up.

The Pour Test

When I uncorked the Surely Pinot Noir, I instantly noticed a sweet smell that reminded me of cranberry-grape juice. The same smell came through when I poured a glass. There might be some plum and passion fruit on the nose, too. It has a nice, velvety red color. The aroma and color hints that it’s too sweet, without enough complexity.

The Taste Test

It’s actually not bad. Not amazing. But not bad. Not as “juicy” as the smell made me expect. It feels like they worked hard to make sure the finish was dry versus sweet, which helps. The complexity and spice of a regular red isn’t there, so you won’t be fooled into thinking it’s legit Pinot Noir. But it’s very drinkable and outperforms a lot of other NA reds.

PRO TIP: open it, pour a glass, then recork and put it in the fridge for a day. Thank me later.

MISSING: Surely Cabernet Sauvignon Review

I wanted to try this the Surely cabernet, but when I did my searches it was out of stock. I will try to get this product and add a review later. I will also try to get the Surely sparkling red, which is their attempt to add a sparkling option to their non-alcoholic red wine lineup.

For now, it’s fair to say that the Cabernet Sauvignon has gotten mixed reviews, with many saying it’s a bit sweet. Perhaps this is why it’s not currently listed on their website???

What other people are saying

I’m just one person. So it’s good to see what other people are saying about Surely non-alcoholic wines. First, you can see the reviews on Surely’s website. But those are biased and cherry-picked. Here’s a summary of other ratings:

BONUS: Surely Wine Club Subscription Review

Surely makes decent non-alcoholic wine. But it can get expensive. Prices range between $24.99 and $29.99 a bottle. Ever think you’d pay $25-30 for imitation wine? Me either.

Luckily, you can get a break buying through the Surely wine club subscription, which knocks up to 25% off the price for a 6 bottle subscription.

Is Surely wine worth it?

If you need decent non-alcoholic wines, Surely is worth it. Just keep in mind that you can’t expect Surely wines—or any non-alcoholic wines—to taste and feel like the real thing. If you are okay with compromising on some of the qualities of alcoholic wines, you shouldn’t be disappointed.

It’s worth mentioning that Surely wine is made with natural ingredients, making it a healthier option. It’s also good for a gluten free, vegan, or keto diet. But what really makes it worth it is you can reduce alcohol intake, calories, and live your social life all at the same time.

But there are other options, too. Feel free to check out our NA wine buying guide for more.

What to do now

You know what I think are their best offerings. Just consider what you’re looking for in a non-alcoholic wine and go from there. I highly suggest trying the Sparkling Rose or the Sparkling Brut, either of which come in cans (Rose cans here, brut cans here). If you are into reds, check out the Pinot Noir.

If money is important, start a club subscription that you can just cancel later! And if you’re not sold on Surely, check out our NA Wine buying guide for more options!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can you buy Surely wine?

You can get Surely Wine directly from the source at drinksurely.com. I recommend the wine club subscription if money is an issue. (Isn’t it always?) If you buy direct, save on shipping by spending over $100 (4 bottles). I’ll be honest that I have found their website clunky and glitchy at times.

Alternatively, you can shop Surely non alcoholic wines at ProofNoMore or Better Rhodes. INSIDER TIP: At ProofNoMore you can save money by getting the sparkling rosé cans or sparkling brut cans in singles.

Surely Wine Making Process

Surely’s website describes their wine-making as a multi-step process:

  1. Source high-quality grapes from California wineries.
  2. Fermentation.
  3. De-alcoholization using spinning cone column technology. They say this allows for alcohol removal while keeping the wine’s “natural essence and aromatics.”
  4. Blend in small amounts of juice and other ingredients. This adds finishing touches to round out the body and perfect the flavor.
  5. Enjoy the result.

Is Surely wine good?

Compared to other non-alcoholic wine brands, Surely wines are some of the best on the market. We have to remember that good non-alcoholic wines are tough to find. Most have no complexity, are too sweet, or too acidic. Here’s why Surely non-alcoholic wine stands out:

These are impressive accomplishments when you’re trying do something notoriously difficult, like making non-alcoholic wine that isn’t disgusting.

SIDE NOTE: This is why some companies (like Acid League’s Proxies) pass on dealcoholization of wine and do “wine replacements” instead. Rather than trying to be wine, these ones have their own special ingredients and taste profile.

What to serve with Surely wine

Here are some good pairing options for Surely non-alcoholic wines:

  • Sparkling rosé: soft cheeses, BBQ, fatty meats, and greasy dishes pair nicely with its dry, acidic taste profile.
  • Sparkling brut: shellfish, oysters, light fish, fried chicken, and salty snacks all pair well with its citrus and green apple flavor profile.
  • Sparkling white: Salty cheeses, olives, foie gras, and fried duck go nicely with the zesty lemon and acidity.
  • Pinot noir: Herby and peppery charcuterie snacks pair well with Surely pinot noir’s dry finish and fruit notes. Pizza and chicken also pair nicely.

What Does Surely Wine Taste Like?

Surely Wine‘s range of non-alcoholic beverages have been crafted to taste like the real thing, even if they fall short of that mark. They source the highest quality California grapes and work with talented winemakers in Sonoma to create a beverage that is light on calories and full of flavor.

Customers have described the taste as “great for sipping on a golden autumn afternoon” and “thoughtfully crafted using great ingredients without alcohol.” If you’re looking for a decent alternative to regular wine, Surely Wine is worth a try. Just keep in mind it won’t rival the real thing.

Is there any alcohol in Surely wine?

Yes, there is no alcohol in Surely wine. Each of their wines are 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV). At this concentration, you would need to drink about 100 ounces of Surely wine to reach 1 standard serving of alcohol. (I wouldn’t go there, but it’s up to you.)

They accomplish this low ABV by dealcoholizing fermented grapes (wine). They use an innovative technology called Spinning Cone Column to remove the alcohol without sacrificing the taste.

How long does Surely wine last?

Surely Wine can last up to 3-4 days after opening, as long as it is stored properly in the refrigerator. I think the Pinot Noir tasted better after a day. And the carbonation on the sparkling varietals held up really well.

For the best experience, I recommended you consume the wine within 3 days of opening. To ensure the wine lasts for as long as possible, make sure to store it in a cool, dark place and away from direct sunlight. It’s also best to keep the bottle upright and not shake it.

How many calories are in Surely wine?

Surely wine contains between 15 to 50 calories per serving, depending on the type of wine. The carbs range from 2g to 12g per serving, and the sugar content ranges from 1g to 4g per serving. Go back to the reviews to see details for each varietal.

How much does Surely wine cost?

The pricing is one of the biggest complaints about Surely non-alcoholic wines. The cheapest bottle is $25, while the most expensive is $30. That’s a lot for “not wine.” To be fair, any NA wine that’s decent is about as expensive.

As I mentioned above, the best way to ease the pain on cost is to sign up for the wine club subscription, which gets you 20-25% off, depending on quantity. I highly recommend doing it. If you don’t love it, cancel anytime and skip shipments.

Can you drink Surely while pregnant?

Studies on the effects of alcohol-free wines on pregnancies and birth defects are lacking. So drinking non-alcoholic wine during pregnancy is a judgment call. It has been shown that even “light drinking” has “surprisingly limited” impacts on a healthy pregnancy.

But, to be fair, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggests that pregnant women stay away entirely. So even while the amounts of alcohol in Surely wines are minimal (less than .05%), some expectant mothers may opt to cut low-alcohol drinks altogether to play it safe.

Plus, labels lie sometimes and detectable levels of alcohol can vary.
